English Proficiency

A uniform graduation requirement of the university is that students demonstrate English proficiency. Evidence for this is a grade of C- or better in English 102. An equivalent English writing course may be transferred from a regionally accredited institution. A "C-" or better in English 101 is required for admission to the Electrical Engineering Program. and for study of English 102. English 102 must be completed with a grade of "C-" or better before taking ECE 206L. All laboratory courses which have ECE 206L in the chain of prerequisites must necessarily have English 102 as a prerequisite. This applies to ECE 327L, ECE 419L, ECE 419L and ECE 491. A student may be dropped from any of these courses for not having the proper prerequisites or may not receive credit in the course if English 102 is not taken with "C-" or better grade before entering one of these courses. Technical proficiency and laboratory performance alone are not sufficient for credit in the laboratory courses above. One must demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication, including formal reports.

Eight Hour Rule
With the exception of MATH 316, students are not to enroll for 300-level courses and above unless they are within 8 hours of completion of first and second year requirements and they are enrolled for the remaining courses. See page 247 of 1993-95 UNM Catalog for additional details.
